Contrary to what you might have once believed, you don’t need alcohol or drugs to have a good time. There are plenty of fun things to do that don’t involve alcohol, particularly when the weather is warm.
Are you adjusting to a new, sober lifestyle and unsure about how to spend your time? With some research and effort, you’ll find yourself enjoying summertime even more than you used to, free from addiction and with a fresh outlook on life.
Sober summertime activities
1. Hang out by the water
With temperatures rising, finding a body of water is a sure-fire way to have fun and cool down. Whether you have access to a pool in your own backyard, visit a local community pool or spend the day at a nearby lake or ocean beach, going for a swim can be relaxing and fun. Bring a book, snacks and sunscreen and enjoy the peaceful respite of the water.
2. Make a summery meal
There’s no limit to the variety of delicious summer-themed recipes you can find online. You might assemble refreshing salads, try new rubs on traditional burgers or mix up dips for chips and veggies. Additionally, sharing a meal is a great way to get together and spend quality time with friends and family.
3. Discover a new show
While most of these activities center around the outdoors, sometimes you need a backup plan for rainy days, days when it’s simply too hot (and the pool isn’t an option) or days when you need to recharge. Working your way through a TV series is an easy way to spend a restful afternoon. Watching an episode here or there will pass the time and give you an hour or two of rest to look forward to.
4. Design and plant a garden
Anyone can do this, whether you have a big backyard or not. For those living in an apartment, condo or other small space, you can purchase a small gardening planter and grow your garden on your porch or balcony. If you’re feeling extra handy, you can build your own raised garden boxes in your yard and start a vegetable or flower garden right from the comfort of your home.
5. Buy a hammock
Many hammocks are small and portable, designed to be strung between two trees. You should be able to find two trees almost anywhere – off the beaten path, by the ocean or in a city park. Bring a book, take a nap or call a friend and enjoy the breeze.
6. Find an outdoor market or festival
Many communities offer seasonal activities, like farmer’s markets, art shows or music festivals. These provide opportunities for entertainment and new ways to spend time without venturing too far from home. If you’ve never had the chance to discover what your local area offers, outdoor summer events are a great way to do so.
7. Compile a playlist
Nothing says summer quite like a vibey summer playlist. As long as the music makes you happy and includes your favorite songs, there’s no wrong way to curate a personalized playlist. Share your favorite music with a friend on a car ride, sing along in the shower or blast it with your windows down.
8. Start a journal
Journaling allows you to process your thoughts and emotions in a creative and safe way. You can take your journal with you anywhere. Allow the beauty of the outdoors to inspire your thoughts, or make it a part of your daily routine, something you do on the porch with your morning coffee.
