How Is Alcohol Abuse Unhealthy?
When you drink heavily, your body is unable to absorb the vitamins and minerals it needs to sustain nutrition.
Alcohol abuse can also cause deficiencies in the following:
- Zinc
- Phosphate
- Magnesium
- Thiamine
- Folate
If you’re wondering when the best time is to quit drinking, the answer is always now.
Stages of Withdrawal
Many individuals with alcohol abuse issues are scared of detoxing because of the unknown – withdrawal can look different for everyone. We’ve helped countless individuals detox and move on to live improved lives, and while withdrawal can be difficult, we know what to expect and can help you prepare and brave the process.
There are three main stages of alcohol abuse withdrawal. The first begins about eight hours after your last drink and typically produces tremors.
Other symptoms during this first stage include:
- Accelerated heartbeat
- Clammy skin
- Depression
- Excess sweating
- Headaches
- Inability to focus
- Irritation
- Less energy
- Mood changes
- Nausea
- Nervousness
- Nightmares
- No appetite
- Pupil dilation
- Restlessness
- Sleeplessness
- Trembling appendages
- Vomiting
These symptoms can last from one to three days. While at our facility, you’ll be able to have your progress monitored closely with the help of our staff.
The second stage of alcohol withdrawal is more severe than the first, with symptoms that happen more quickly. If you’re a heavy drinker, you may experience high blood pressure spikes and hallucinations.
Other symptoms include:
- Muscle rigidity
- Loss of bowel control
- Loss of bladder control
- Breathing difficulties
- Respiratory disruptions
- Jaw clenching
- Teeth clenching
- Biting the cheek or tongue uncontrollably
The third stage of withdrawal can last as long as three or four days, and includes many of the symptoms you’ll experience in the first two stages. You need medical assistance more than ever in the third stage, because symptoms can be serious and can result in respiratory and cardiovascular issues.
Symptoms include:
- Confusion
- Hallucination
- Inability to focus
- Fever
- Pupil dilation
- Sweating
You’ll want to be in a safe environment surrounded by people who are here to help you while you go through withdrawal. Withdrawal from alcohol can make you confused or irritable, and Freedom Detox can make sure you don’t do anything to harm yourself or others.
