Young Moms More Likely to Drink Before and After Pregnancy

Greensboro NC Alcohol RehabDrinking alcohol can be harmful to anyone's health, especially when excessive drinking occurs. It's especially harmful to pregnant women. According to sciencedaily.com, "Researchers recruited 456 pregnant women, ages 13 to 42 years, at an urban prenatal clinic. The women (64% African-American, 36% White) were interviewed about alcohol use during pregnancy, at delivery, and again at six, 10, 14, and 16 years postpartum. The majority of mothers (66%) were identified as having low-risk trajectories of alcohol use during the 17-year span. However, maternal age at first birth predicted one high-risk group: younger mothers were more likely to engage in risky drinking early in pregnancy, which continued for six to 14 years postpartum. The authors suggest that these results can help physicians target mothers who are likely to exceed national guidelines calling for abstinence during pregnancy, and no more than seven drinks per week during postpartum."

Mothers that choose to drink alcohol after childbirth can put themselves and their child at risk. This is especially true for those mothers who breastfeed their baby. Even worse, alcohol abuse can lead to neglect of the child, injuries and more.

We all know what can come from drinking alcohol during pregnancy. Mothers who choose to drink alcohol during pregnancy run the risk of giving their unborn baby fetal alcohol syndrome. While there are several different forms of this disease, the end result is the same, a baby that's born addicted to alcohol. The symptoms are as followed:

  • Abnormal appearance
  • Behavior problems
  • Low body weight
  • Low intelligence
  • Poor coordination
  • Problems with hearing or seeing
  • Short height
  • Small head

Children born to mothers who drank during pregnancy as well as just after while breastfeeding tend to suffer later in life with the following:

  • Addiction to alcohol or other drugs
  • Frequently jailed
  • Trouble in school
  • Trouble with law enforcement
  • Involved in high-risk sexual activity

The transition to being a parent can be stressful, overwhelming, and scary. It's understandable that young moms might have trouble transitioning. However, turning to alcohol isn't an ideal way to help ease into the new role. Sometimes, it's hard to understand why one might turn to alcohol. That doesn't mean, however, that they don't need help and support.

Substance abuse is dangerous for any teen or young adult. It's especially dangerous for those that are pregnant. Don't assume that mothers of this age are aware of how bad drinking is for them and their child. Offer them the information and knowledge they need to make the best decision. Help them choose a Greensboro alcohol rehab program that can help them through difficult cravings and addictions.
