Understanding Personality Disorders

mental health facilities in Raleigh, NCOur personality is what defines us as an individual.  Personality is the set of traits and behaviors that make you act or react in a certain way. It seems fairly simple, but in reality personality is very complex.

There are so many components to personality.  A personality disorder is a deeply ingrained, inflexible pattern of relating, perceiving and thinking which is serious enough to cause distress or impaired functioning. Most people with personality disorders have a hard time dealing with other people. They are typically inflexible in most scenarios and unable to respond to the changes and demands of day to day life. They might seem like they are overly sensitive or react strangely or dramatically to a regular non-confrontational situation. Those with personality disorders also have a very hard time seeing a different point of view and often have a narrow view of life and the world.

Our team of professional clinicians and therapists at Legacy Freedom of Raleigh have experience dealing with personality disorders and the mental illnesses that accompany them. Mental health practitioners have recognized eight main personality disorders and organized them into three main categories.

Group A: Odd or Erratic Disorders

  • Schizoid Personality Disorder – Individuals tend to be introverted, emotionally cold and withdrawn from the population. They are often scared of contact with other people and have a fear of closeness or relationships with other people.
  • Paranoid Personality Disorder – The most common trait of this disorder is people who find the intentions of others malicious and threatening. They are untrusting, unforgiving and tend to act out in anger towards people who question their actions because they feel like they are acting rationally.
  • Schizotypal Personality Disorder - These people tend to act or speak strangely and may even dress in a peculiar manner. They tend to have a hard time dealing with people in the “real world” because they do not feel like they have many things in common with them. They are withdrawn and prone to experience extreme anxiety in social situations. They tend to be eccentric and have odd manners.

Group B: Dramatic, Irrational and Emotional Behaviors

  • Antisocial Personality Disorder – People with this behavior disorder tend to act out in their conflicts with others, they tend to ignore rules because they feel as though they do not apply to them. They tend to be impulsive, irresponsible and calculated. They show no respect towards others and feel no remorse. They are high risk for substance abuse.
  • Borderline Personality Disorder- This disorder is hallmarked by unstable moods and behaviors. They tend to have self-destructive, unpredictable personalities and have a tremendous problem with identity. Self-mutilation and suicidal gestures tend to be their go-to for attention seeking.
  • Narcissistic Personality Disorder – They have a tendency towards having a huge sense of self-importance. They seek constant attention and they tend to live in a fantasy world and think they have unlimited success. They are also prone to extreme mood swings.

Group C: Anxious and Fearful Behavior

  • Avoidant Personality Disorder – These individuals are hypersensitive to rejection, and will not become involved in situations unless they know they are liked by everyone participating. They experience excessive social discomfort, are afraid of saying things to hurt others and do not like to show emotion in front of others.
  • Dependent Personality Disorder - People with dependent submissive behaviors will let other people make all their decisions for them. They are lacking in self-confidence. This disorder is most often diagnosed in females.
