Underage Drinking Problems In Greensboro NC

According to greensboro.com, "Parents driving around Guilford County will soon see this message: “Start the conversation. Stop underage drinking.” Local law enforcement cruisers will sport bumper stickers with that slogan. The N.C. ABC Commission hopes the bumper stickers will nudge parents to talk to their children about the dangers of underage drinking. The bumper stickers are the latest effort of the commission’s Talk it Out N.C. campaign.

Unfortunately, fatal crashes involving underage drinking are on the rise. In 2016 alone, there have been 10 deaths in Greensboro to date.  In 2015 there were 11. There were only six fatal crashes involving alcohol and those underage in 2014. As you can see from this data, the problem is becoming worse. And, keep in mind that the numbers are from Guilford County only. While the awareness campaign is starting to gain traction, there are still many parents who don't know as much about this situation as their children do. Most parents assume that they should talk to their children about drinking alcohol at a much later age. However, doing so in middle school is key. Even as early as elementary school wouldn't hurt.

There are TV, radio and other ads working with the bumper stickers that help bring awareness to parents. The county is excited to announce that more than 90% of parents who have seen one of the ads has talked to their children about underage drinking. The awareness is becoming more obvious as the campaign is slowly doing its job. It's not a situation that will resolve overnight, but Greensboro is doing what it can to bring about awareness. Police chief Ron Parrish thinks that the dangers of underage drinking and increasing awareness to it will take a decade or more before it's fully understood and children know to refrain from drinking until they are of age.

Those that live in and around the Greensboro area can join in the campaign by picking up bumper stickers from the North Carolina Alcohol Beverage Control Center.
