The Fourth of July is a holiday that many look forward to each year. It's a time to celebrate the freedom of our country. We often have most of the week off to celebrate with friends and family and grill out by the pool or other outdoor areas!
Unfortunately, for many the Fourth of July is also a time for drinking and using drugs. Many addicts use this time to take advantage of celebrations and time away from work or school.
Don't let this holiday be your reason to relapse! There are several tips you can use to help you stay safe and sober! If you need drug treatment in Asheville NC, call Legacy Freedom.
Choose to Stay at Home - The best, most effective way to avoid triggers and relapse is to stay at home during this holiday. While it might not be the most fun option, it is the safest. Especially for newly recovering addicts, you'll want to make sure you don't put yourself in a situation that could cause thoughts about using. Be smart and responsible. If that requires you to stay at home during parties and celebrations, don't feel bad for doing so. Feel accomplished, happy and content!
Be Prepared - If you do choose to go out and celebrate for the Fourth of July, prepare yourself, mentally. Spend the week leading up to the events thinking about ways to refuse drugs or alcohol that you may come in contact with. Also consider bringing a sober friend to help you steer clear of using.
Prepare to Say No - If you choose to go to a party where you might run into drugs or alcohol, prepare for having to say no. This can be most difficult for a newly recovering addict, but not impossible. Practice staying no to friends and family. Role play and be prepared to firmly say no.
Exercise - Make sure you have some type of physical activity going on in the days leading up to the party. You'll need physical strength in addition to mental strength. Take a few extra runs or trips to the gym to help you in this upcoming situation.
Throw the Celebration - Who says you can't be the one to throw your own celebration? Invite friends and family you can trust to stay sober with you. Grill out, listen to music and play board games or just sit and talk. You'll be surprised by how many of your friends and family will be happy to help you have your own sober party!
These tips, combined with your strength and knowledge gained through rehab or therapy will help you stay sober this Fourth of July, while having fun, spending time with loved ones!
