For some, winter is a depressing season that means overindulging in alcohol or drugs in order to deal with the cold weather and dark days. If you’re in recovery, you have to find other ways to deal with these few months of the year in order to avoid relapse.
If you don't have an addiction problem, but fear that you could develop one because the winter months make you depressed or bored, you need other things to do with your time as well. Either way, we’re here with some tips for managing the winter months without turning to drugs or alcohol. If you need alcohol or drug rehab in Raleigh NC, call Legacy Freedom today!
Sober Living in the Winter
Sure, it’s cold and going outside might be the last thing you want to do, but there are lots of fun winter activities you can try to keep busy. Skiing, snowboarding and tubing are fun ways to take advantage of the cold and snow. Get out a shovel and clear off your walkways, build a snowman or make a snow angel.
If you’d really rather stay indoors, sign up for fitness classes at a gym or try hot yoga. You can also get exercise DVDs or video games and get a workout in the comfort and warmth of your own home. There are also free workout videos available online.
Find a hobby.
Take up knitting and make a scarf to wear during the cold winter months. Learn to quilt and make a blanket for those nights you curl up on the couch and binge watch the newest season of your favorite show. If you like to cook, try a new cuisine once a week. If you’ve always wanted to learn to paint, this might be the time to get a canvas and paint a snowy landscape.
Do some gardening.
The ground outside might be frozen, but you can start a container garden on your kitchen windowsill if you’ve got enough sunlight coming in. Herbs such as rosemary, chives, cilantro and oregano can grow in containers. Leafy greens like lettuce and kale are also cold-hardy and do well in the winter months. Just make sure they will get about six hours of sunlight a day.
Pretend it’s summer.
Turn the heat up, put on your shorts and flip flops, and ignore the snow outside. Throw some hot dogs and hamburgers on the indoor grill and you’ve got yourself a cookout. Make a summer time playlist with all the songs that make you think of long hot days and swimming pools.
Do something for yourself.
Book a treatment at a day spa to get a massage or a mani/pedi. Plan a weekend getaway if you can afford it. Do something you’ve wanted to do but didn’t think you should because that money could be better spend elsewhere. You don’t have to go overboard, but you should treat yourself every once in a while. Even if it’s something as small as going out for a fancy dessert at an expensive restaurant, it’ll be worth it to have a new experience and get your mind off the winter blues.
Enjoy the moment.
Even though winter can seem gloomy, beauty can be found in the colder months. Try to appreciate the small things like the frost on the tip of a tree branch, or the joy of seeing kids playing in the snow.
