Quite often, we think about teens who've been influenced by their parents to smoke, drink or try drugs. They see their parents do it and think, why shouldn't I try it? However, we rarely consider the impact this will have on teens later in life.
We might assume that underage drinking or smoking weed is a phase they're going through. It could blow over as quickly as it started. However, many studies show that those teens who have easy access to drugs and alcohol at an early age will be more likely to have an addiction in adulthood. In particular, a recent study shows the serious possibility of this. If you're searching for drug rehab in Greensboro NC for yourself or a family member, be sure to call Legacy Freedom. Teen Access to Drugs and Alcohol Leads to Adult Abuse
Cliff Broman, professor of sociology at Michigan State University and leader of the national study that looked at parents of teens that were exposed to illegal drugs stated that, "While there have been many studies linking alcohol and drug use by parents to substance use among youths, there is limited research on how the availability of alcohol and drugs in the home may influence patterns of use among offspring in the future. These findings provide evidence that the availability of illegal drugs and alcohol in the home while growing up is a critical factor in the later use of substances."
The study (The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health) worked with around 15,000 students ages 16 and 22, as well as individuals aged 29, on average.
We all know that kids pick up habits and hobbies from their parents while growing up. It might be keeping a clean house, loving to organize, playing musical instruments or loving sports. There are also negative things they can inherit, as well. Especially when it comes to teens living in a household where their parents actively drink and/or do drugs right in the same room as them. If this is a regular occurrence, it's possible that the kids, even if they don't do drugs or drink while underage, will pick up the bad habits later in life.
This is something to think about, as parents are raising their children. Of course, having a drink or glass of wine at night with dinner is one thing, but getting drunk most nights, partaking in illegal drugs at home or always being out partying will influence children well into their teen years to do the same as adults.
Do you, as a parent, worry that your drinking or drug use will become a habit your children will pick up in their adult life? If so, now might be the time to stop substance abuse. Addiction isn't something that can be resolved quickly, but recovery is possible for anyone willing to commit to it.
