Substance abuse knows no age. Whether you are a hard partying 20-something or a senior citizen who likes to have a few too many glasses of wine in the evening, no one is immune to addiction. Seeking treatment for your addiction at any age is important. Though the drug of choice may change over time, the health consequences and the lifelong impact of addiction are still the same. If you have a loved one with addiction problems, call a Raleigh drug and alcohol treatment center you can trust. Call Legacy Freedom today.
One can hardly turn on the news or pick up a magazine without seeing an article or mention of the nationwide crisis involving painkiller addiction. As prescription opioids gain popularity, the number of addicted millenials continues to climb. Those born between 1983 and 2002 have pushed painkiller addiction to the forefront of conversation with record numbers of addicts, overdoses, and incarcerations related to the drug. A staggering 12 percent of millenials aged 19-20 recent report abuse of painkillers. This generation is also using alcohol at an alarmingly high rate. Eighty percent of millennials say they are abusing alcohol on a regular basis. Peak usage for marijuana among this group happens in their mid-20s with about 30 to 50 percent using regularly. Stimulants have fallen out of favor with this generation, as have sedatives. Still, the painkiller epidemic rages on. Hospitals, first responders and emergency rooms across the nation struggle to keep enough Narcan on hand to treat overdose patients.
Born between 1963 and 1982, Generation X or GenXers were a hard-partying lot who preferred alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, and ecstasy. As the club scene took hold and grunge music was in, this generation made the rounds from music festivals to raves, experimenting and imbibing to excess. This generation is also associated with one of the highest addiction rates to cigarettes.
Baby boomers have been partying hard for decades, and they show no signs of slowing down. Born in the years 1943-1962 this generation has a penchant for marijuana, stimulants, sedatives, and alcohol. They love it all and use it all to the limit. Many boomers are finding themselves struggling with addiction into their golden years. See our previous post on baby boomers and addiction. Almost 10 percent of this generation report abusing sedatives like phenobarbital or secobarbital and more than 12 percent reported using amphetamines and other stimulants like cocaine. Even more shocking is that 80 percent of this generation still admits to drinking to excess way past age 50.
Regardless of which generation you belong to, addiction to drugs or alcohol is a lifelong battle for sobriety. Typically, after ten years of alcohol dependency, the addict decides to receive treatment. However, in that decade of abuse, much damage can be done to the physical, emotional and mental well-being of the addict.

We believe that addiction knows no age and that deciding to seek treatment is the most important step you can take towards changing your life, health, and well-being for the better. Our program is not a twelve step program. Each client is assigned a Life-Purpose coach as they begin their journey to sobriety. Together with your coach and your care team you will develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs and goals. Identifying the underlying cause for your addiction is the starting point for your recovery. Through one-on-one talk therapy sessions with your therapist and group therapy sessions with your peers, you will discover why you choose to use and what co-occurring issues have fed your addiction for so long. Connecting with your peers during your recovery allows you to form a network of support away from our outpatient facility.
Many of our clients choose to involve their friends, family and loved ones in their recovery process. We encourage these vital people in your life to participate in healthy, positive and engaging ways to help you make the transition towards your new sober life easier. Drawing support from those you trust and love can make the hard days of the journey easier.
