Are you worried about the safety of your teen son or daughter when it comes to drinking and driving? If so, you're not alone. While we don't ever want to consider what might happen if our kids make poor choices, it is a fact that these types of issues do come about during their teenage and young adult years.
A new Canadian study shows that one in three high school students are getting into vehicles with a driver who has been drinking alcohol. This is an alarmingly high rate and can be very shocking for many parents. If your son or daughter needs Greensboro NC alcohol rehab or drug treatment, be sure to call Legacy Freedom for help.
The same studies, done in 2014 and 15 by the Canadian Student Tobacco, Alcohol and Drug survey, found that one in five students were getting into a car with a driver high on marijuana.
Unfortunately, more than 30% of all students in high school, of all ages, were riding in cars with drivers that have been drinking. While some of them have only had one or two drinks within the hour, almost 20% of them have used marijuana within two hours of operating a vehicle.
This can be very scary for parents who had no idea their teens were riding with those who are under the influence of alcohol or marijuana.
The study shows that girls are more likely to ride with drivers who have been drinking. Boys are more likely to ride with drivers who have been smoking marijuana. Rural area based students are at a greater risk for drinking and driving than those students who are from urban areas.
According to Leia Minaker, assistant professor at the University of Waterloo, "These numbers are concerning because Canadian youth are at higher risk of death from traffic injuries than any other age group. A significant proportion of car-crash deaths are related to alcohol and drug impairment."
Minaker also states that, "The link between alcohol-impaired driving and collision rates is well recognized, but the consequences of marijuana use are less clear. As legislation is drafted to regulate recreational marijuana over the coming months, the federal government and the provinces need to prioritize keeping marijuana away from kids and creating strong policies to reduce marijuana-impaired driving."
It's hard to think about the fact that teens are dying in vehicles due to alcohol related crashes. However, the facts are here for us to see. That's why it's important to teach our kids from a young age about drug and alcohol prevention and why it's the safest way to steer clear of addiction and injuries related to alcohol use.
