Students at an elite high school have benefits and privileges when it comes to education. Because there's potential for high levels of achievement when attending an elite school, there tends to be a great deal of pressure on the student, as well. Unfortunately, the advantages top students have at elite schools also come with a few unwanted byproducts, as well. A new study done by Arizona State University has shown that teens who are attending top schools all over the U.S. are at risk for substance abuse issues as well as developing an addiction in their adult life. Let's take a closer look. If your son or daughter needs the quality alcohol and drug rehab in Greensboro NC, call Legacy Freedom for help.
The study worked with young adults who had previously been in attendance at one of the lead schools within the U.S. There was a series of assessments done annually on the young adults. The study began while they were seniors and followed them until they turned 27.
Research showed that an alarmingly high percentage of the former students were struggling seriously with addiction and substance abuse.
Below, you will find elevations in several indicators of substance abuse and addiction as found by the study. The following concerns were most prevalent:
- Regularly using cocaine
- Taking ADD medication such as Adderall or Concerta, recreationally or without a prescription
- Binge drinking or drinking until intoxication occurs
- Smoking or ingesting marijuana
- Using ecstasy and other club drugs
According to lead author of this study, Suniya Luthar, a professor of psychology at Arizona State University, "We found rates of addiction to drugs or alcohol among 19 to 24 percent of women in the older cohort by the age of 26, and 23 to 40 percent among men. These rates were three and two times as high respectively, as compared to national norms. Paradoxical though it may seem, these ostensibly privileged youth, many of who start experimenting early and often with drinking and drugs, could well be among the groups at highest risk for alcoholism and addiction in adulthood."
As you can see, it's an issue that's happening across our country. Because of high pressures, teen rebellion and other reasons, elite students are acting out and turning to substance abuse. Teens are known to rebel at times though their adolescent years. However, it's a dangerous situation and one they sadly don't give much thought to. Unfortunately, substance abuse can easily lead to addiction before they even realize it's a problem.
Do you, as a parent, worry that your drinking or drug use will become a habit your children will pick up in their adult life? If so, now might be the time to stop substance abuse. Addiction isn't something that can be resolved quickly, but recovery is possible for anyone willing to commit to a quality rehab program.
