When we hear someone say spring cleaning, we automatically think of cleaning up the home and removing all of the collected clutter from the previous years. Spring cleaning can also be used as an opportunity to renew your own personal energy and focus as well. By using this time to get rid of the negative things, or people in your life, you too can feel rejuvenated in your quest for sobriety.
The spring months are wonderful for recovering addicts. As nature is starting over, so can those in treatment for substance abuse. It's a perfect time of the year to purge all of the bad and welcome all things good. It does not matter if you are returning home from treatment, or just entering recovery, turning over a new leaf in life will help you on your sobriety journey. Just remember, you can turn over as many new leaves in your life as you need to, just as long as the changes are for the positive.
Clean Your Home - To fully embrace your new sober life, you have to give up your old ways. Whether you are an alcoholic or drug addict, your life will never move forward unless you can remove as many of these items from your life as possible. This even means getting rid of your shot glass and beer mug collections, old bottles, or signs of liquor and beer companies hanging on your wall. You really need to get rid of anything that reminds of you of your former addicted self. Clean your home of even the smallest of triggers, whether it be a CD that you would always jam too when drinking, or a favorite movie that you would always watch when getting high. These were not the good ole days so do not treat them as such.
Remove Toxic Relationships - The people that helped you get addicted are not your true friends. The people that got you drunk or high so that they could take advantage of you are not your true friends. Anyone that makes you feel like giving up sobriety is not a true friend. You have to remove toxic people from your life in order to move forward in your sobriety treatment.
Learn How to Forgive - Holding a grudge will only trigger emotions that will make you want to use drugs and alcohol again. You have to learn how to let go of your past resentments. We know that forgiveness is not something that just comes overnight, but the quicker you can come to these closures, the better off your life will be.
Start New Hobbies - Spring is the perfect time of the year to learn something new. Whatever it is that you can do to get up and out of the house, and outdoors doing something different, the better your sobriety will be. Now that you are sober, you will have a lot of extra time and money on your hands to try new things. Try to find a few hobbies where you have to learn something new. This will give you a challenge and you'll be focused on learning this new skill, rather than using.
