Do you think social drinking is OK as long as you don't drink too much? If so, there are several things you should learn before making that decision.

Social drinkers are at risk for developing health issues that can be long-term, just as those that drink too much. Though you aren't drinking too much all at once, you are drinking regularly. That's almost as bad.

More than 55% of people questioned in a YouGov poll thought that alcohol only damages your health if you regularly get drunk or binge drink.

The 2010 survey of 2,000 adults also found that 83% believed that regularly drinking more than the recommended daily limits didn’t put their long-term health at risk. The survey suggests that 7.5 million people are unaware of the damage their drinking can do to the body.

  • Men should not regularly drink more than 3-4 units of alcohol a day
  • Women should not regularly drink more than 2-3 units a day
  • If you've had a heavy drinking session, avoid alcohol for 48 hours

Social Drinking Tips

To help you learn how to control drinking and ensure that it's not harming your body, follow the tips below:

Drink Water

Try alternating drinks with water. Have one alcoholic drink and then a water after. You'll stay hydrated and drink less alcohol because you'll fill up on water.

Drink Light Beer

Did you know that light beer has less alcohol than other dark beers? There's often a 6 percent difference in the amount! Stick to light beer when socially drinking to make sure you don't over do it!

Arrive Later

If you've planned a night of drinking with friends, show up an hour late. You'll be able to cut down on drinking as much by cutting time.

Half Shots

Instead of ordering an entire shot, order a half shot. Or, only drink half the shot and save the rest for later.

There are ways to avoid excessive drinking, socially. You'll need to incorporate a few of these tips, but it's manageable and possible. You don't want to put your body at risk when it comes to having a good time. Limit your social drinks to keep your body healthy.
