Skateboarding can help reduce stress. It helps you take your mind off of what it is that’s bothering you. It also can clear your mind and give you a perspective that helps you gain control of your depression or anxiety. As you begin skateboarding, you will feel more relaxed and at ease.

This physical activity can also help increase happiness and give you a sense of overall wellbeing.

Scott Warneke has made skateboarding part of his everyday life. He skates every single day. Warneke states in, that "Before 2014, I’d been going through what was essentially a three-year mental funk. I realized that skateboarding is one of the best things for my mental health—something that brings happiness and spurs creativity."

A Canadian native turned to skateboarding to help with her depression in 2012. Twenty year old Melani Hatter was struggling with severe depression. Eventually, she was hospitalized because of this. While she was in the hospital, she would watch people skateboarding outside her window. As she watched them skating, she began to realize how much she loved skateboarding, as well. Once she was out of the hospital, she rekindled her love for skateboarding, with a passion. It helped her get through her tough time and depression.

Once Melani was well enough, she incorporated 30 minutes of skateboarding time each day with her friends. According to her, it helped her beat her severe depression.

In general, around 20 minutes of cardiovascular activity each day can help decrease depression. This is true for women over the age of 26. Men should do cardiovascular activities for 30 to 40 minutes per day in order to help with depression. Skateboarding isn't something that everyone will feel comfortable trying. It can be dangerous and there may not be very many places that skateboarding is allowed in your area. However, that shouldn’t stop you from pursuing some form of physical activity.

Find something that you enjoy that keeps you moving and gets your cardiovascular system going each day to help minimize mental health disorder symptoms.
