Secondhand Smoke And Nicotine Cravings In Kids

It's long been known that firsthand and secondhand smoke is detrimental to adult health. Is it the same for kids? Based on research from nine Canadian institutions, the answer is yes. The research was published in the September 2008 edition of the journal Addictive Behaviors. In summary, cigarette smoking parents who light up around their kids at home, in automobiles, or in other enclosed spaces, could trigger nicotine dependence within their children.

Dr. Jennifer O'Loughlin is a professor at the Université de Montréal's Department of Social and Preventive Medicine. She is also a researcher at the Centre Hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal, and the senior author of the study we're citing. Dr. O'Loughlin said, "Increased exposure to second-hand smoke, both in cars and homes, was associated with an increased likelihood of children reporting nicotine dependence symptoms, even though these children had never smoked." She also stated that the findings "support the need for public health interventions that promote non-smoking in the presence of children, and uphold policies to restrict smoking in vehicles when children are present."

Participants for the study were recruited from 29 Quebec schools and consisted of around 1,800 children aged 10 to 12 years old. The participants came from all socioeconomic levels and backgrounds. The children were asked to complete surveys centering around their health and behaviors. The researchers also asked the children questions about their exposure to secondhand smoke and symptoms related to nicotine dependence. Roughly five percent of the participants, or around 90 children, reported symptoms of nicotine dependence. These children had never smoked a cigarette, but were exposed to secondhand smoke in cars or other enclosed spaces.
