Schizophrenia is a chronic disorder that can be very severe. It affects at least seven out of 1000 individuals. Sometimes, that number can vary to eight per 1000 people. This is not a common disease, and there are very few Wilmington mental health services able to treat. However, it can be extremely disabling. It affects how people act, feel and think. It's possible that they hear voices or see things that are not real. They can believe that people are plotting to harm them, that they can read minds or that they can control thoughts.
This disorder can be extremely difficult for both the person suffering and their friends and family. It's hard to converse with those suffering from schizophrenia. They can sit for hours without talking or moving. At times, they seem normal. Then, they can do something unusual like carry on a conversation with a person who is not there or become agitated for seemingly no reason.
There are many symptoms of schizophrenia. Thought disorders, movement disorders, delusions, hallucinations and other negative symptoms can be an issue. Inability to express emotions, monotone voice, lack of facial expressions, no excitement in everyday life, reduced speaking and even difficulty becoming motivated to do various activities are all issues that people deal with when schizophrenia is experienced.
There have been studies and research done that brings light to a situation that might be useful for those that suffer from this significant mental disease. Those who might be suffering, or those worried that symptoms being experienced could lead to a diagnosis of schizophrenia, might be interested in learning of these findings.
The inferior parietal lobule, also known as IPL, is a part of the cerebral cortex that acts as a crossroads for neural pathways. It’s a pathway for various uniting structures of the brain.
Our brain’s hemispheres each have an IPL within it. The left side of the brain allows us to determine things like how fast a car is moving or other spatial relationships and visual perceptions. The right side allows us to do things like rock climb, know where body parts are located and read expressions or postures.
Would you believe that these IPLs are also helping researchers better understand who is more at risk for certain mental disorders? After studying 30 MRIs from males and females with schizophrenia, it was found that after calculating IPL volume, there were slight, but obvious signs of individuals that are more at risk.
