Schizoaffective disorder is a chronic mental health condition. It's primarily characterized by symptoms of schizophrenia, such as hallucinations or delusions. It's also hallmarked by symptoms of a mood disorder, such as mania and depression. Many people go undiagnosed and believe they are bipolar since these illnesses have many overlapping traits. However, those with Schizoaffective disorder will primarily experience symptoms of psychosis even if a mood problem doesn’t exist. When a mood imbalance does occur during a depressive or manic episode the symptoms of psychoses can worsen.
At Legacy Freedom of Charlotte, NC we specialize in identifying and treating the multiple facets of this complicated and often difficult to pinpoint illness. Through a thorough evaluative process, our highly-trained staff will assess your current mental health state, medical history, physical and emotional needs, and your goals. We believe in treating the whole person, not just the mental illness. We offer traditional therapy coupled with alternative ones like yoga, acupuncture, sound therapy and more to create a one of a kind holistic treatment approach for you. Involving friends and loved ones in your therapy track allows us to help you work on those relationships that may prove challenging to your recovery and long term success.
With schizoaffective disorder, there tends to be a fluctuation in severity. In most cases, it usually contains repeating cycles of severe symptoms followed by periods of improvement. While it is difficult to define schizoaffective disorder in a concrete way, there are hallmark signs and symptoms. The symptoms of this disorder include:
- Hallucinations - seeing and hearing things that aren’t there
- Delusions - false, fixed beliefs that are held regardless of contradictory evidence
- Disorganized thinking – a person might switch between topics or start talking or working on something that is completely unrelated
- Depression or feelings of worthlessness
- Manic Behaviors or Manias - they might experience feelings of euphoria, racing thoughts, increased risky behavior, and uncharacteristic bursts of energy. These manic periods can also include insomnia, being agitated and distracted for no reasons, convinced of their own inflated importance, paranoia and rage
- Impaired occupational, academic or social functioning
- Having a hard time managing personal care and cleanliness
