Addiction is something that most people endure alone. It's a feeling that can't be described but leads to a deep, dark place that causes further substance abuse. Accepting help and support from family and rehab facilities are often the only way out of that dark, sad place.
Just like addiction, the beginning stages of recovery can often seem lonely and sad. Fortunately, there are people you know and love that are ready to help you through this journey. Let them help you. One of the best ways to continue through recovery is allowing the people you love to give you support. It's understandable that family and friends won't quite understand what you're going through. But it's also important to let them be there for you when you need them.
Don't forget that you need the support of your friends and family throughout this journey. Even when you've been sober 5 or 10 years, you'll still need their support. You never know when triggers will be lurking around the corner. It's nice to have a loved one to call during those times of need.
Also keep in mind that your support system can help you through each and every step of rebuilding your life while in addiction recovery. There are many steps that must be taken and it won't be easy to do it alone.
In addition to allowing others to love and support you along the way, consider giving back, as well. Rebuilding your life includes building one that you're proud of. Giving back to others can offer you a sense of accomplishment and motivation that no other thing can.
Volunteer at a homeless shelter or cut the grass for your grandparents each week. Work with a church group and help with their mission outreach. Whether you help family, friends or strangers, you'll feel better about yourself and your goals.
Help others as often as you can. Start small and work your way up to as much or as little as you'd like to do. Doing good for others will give you an overall sense of wellbeing that nothing else can.
