Restructuring your life, after Asheville drug rehab, can seem a bit challenging for someone who's just graduated and got out. You want to do well in recovery, change for the better and live life, drug or alcohol free. Addiction took over your life once, and you're ready to make sure it never happens again.
Recovery is a lifelong journey that takes years to master. Even then, there's a chance that relapse can occur. But, taking the right steps and learning to deal with life, triggers and stress during your journey, you're on the right track to live life addiction free!
Accepting change is the first step to resurrecting life during recovery. According to recovery.org, “Regardless of why you have decided to make a change, the important thing is you are making it, and are motivated to improve your life and your health by putting an end to an addiction to alcohol or drugs, or whatever behavioral addiction or disorder is holding your life captive.”
Living life after going through our Asheville drug rehab will be quite different. Things will be new and foreign at first. Even the small things like going to the grocery store or visiting a friend won't be the same as before. Doing a 180 can be scary but keeping an open mind and accepting a new way of life is a thing that must happen.
Being ready to evolve to a drug free life and keeping an open mind to it can help you through situations. Failing to prepare for it could lead to a relapse before you even realize it. Our goal as recovering addicts is to do whatever it takes to keep our minds and bodies on the healing path of recovery. The last thing we want to do is ruin that by our unwillingness to accept it.
Once you've accepted the changes that recovery brings, it's time to focus on the future. It's likely you'll need a new job. Are you happy with your career choice, pre-recovery? Many people are led to addiction through unhappiness and many times, that comes from our careers. Take this time to dream a little. What type of career would you like to have, if there were no restrictions?
You might have already thought about this during drug rehab. This time, don't limit yourself. Think about what you'd like to do with your life in the future. Where would you like to go? Who do you want to spend time with?
While you're at it, think about your strengths and abilities. What are you good at? Do you dream of traveling the world and teaching less fortunate children? Have you always dreamed of being a musician? Would you like to go back to college and earn a master's degree or finish a bachelor's degree? Remember, we are dreaming here. The sky is the limit!
Once we've established our dreams, brainstorming actual goals for the future comes next. In our next blog post, we will go over this and more! Be sure to check out the rest of this series, below:
