To make your transition from rehab life to sober life easier, there are several things that you can do, that you learned in treatment, to help you along the way. Now, some of you might have transitioned into a sober living facility depending on your situation, but for most ... you're on your own.
Today's world is filled with images, commercials, and TV shows that are filled with lots of drinking and drug use. When most young people go out on the town, they head for the bars and nightclubs. Go out to a restaurant, more than likely there's a bar. These kinds of things can it make it really hard on recovering addicts that are trying to adjust to sobriety.
To stay sober, you have to have a lot of things in place. First, getting reoriented means getting on a schedule. It is critical to fill your day full of activities. For instance, if you don't have a job - find one. If you don't have a degree, then go back to school. If you still have a lot of extra time on your hands, join a gym or volunteer. The key is to fill up as many hours in your day as possible. The more you have to be responsible for, the less likely you'll be to think about using.
Also, find fun activities too. Things like joining a bowling league or corn hole team are great places to start. We suggest that you search the internet for local happenings in your town. You'll probably be surprised by all the fun, and free, activities you'll find. Filtering by "family friendly" will also help you avoid trigger situations.
Another great way to get reoriented is by adopting a pet. If you think you are responsible enough to care for another living being, getting a pet is great therapy for the recovering addict that has many benefits. Pets, especially dogs, can help you get in better shape, they'll help keep you on a schedule, and they'll be there for you to talk to when things feel off.
These are just a few ways to help you get reoriented back into the world. Feeling comfortable in your sober skin is not going to happen overnight so try to give it some time, and be open minded about trying new things.
