Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), 6.8 million Americans suffer from GAD as an adult each year. General anxiety seems to have no real cause, and can be mild to severe. Most of the time, this type leaves you feeling worried about things excessively for six months or more during each episode. Those that only have a mild case can function normally, but severe cases tend to have issues with day to day life.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Habitual activities like counting, constantly checking on something or hand-washing is a type of anxiety that causes overwhelming compulsions. The desire to perform rituals constantly can’t be controlled.
One might feel panicked in certain situations, but those that suffer from panic disorder often feel anxious about impending doom and terror without any specific reason behind the emotions. These strong fears come from seemingly nowhere. Shortness of breath, heart palpitations, chest pain and repeated attacks are common symptoms. While any type of anxiety disorder can cause attacks likes these at some point, panic disorder happens frequently.
This is a disorder that isn’t typically associated with anxiety unless you’ve done some research. Phobias include claustrophobia, acrophobia, agoraphobia, cynophobia and more. The extreme fear of situations or objects causes serious needs to avoid them at all costs.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Those who go through a traumatic experience or witness something devastating can develop PTSD. This type of anxiety might be sudden or gradual issue. It might occur years after the experience. Anxiety comes in forms of attacks and can be triggered or come without warning. We tend to group this type of anxiety with soldiers of war but the disorder can happen in anyone that has experienced something traumatic.
Social Anxiety Disorder
This type of anxiety leaves you unable to handle situations in public, or socially, with crippling anxiety. It can leave you feeling paralyzed and humiliated. The disorder also causes severe shame and loneliness. Close to 15 million adults in the U.S suffer from this type each year. Most onset cases can appear by the age of 13. More than thirty percent of all cases wait until a decade of suffering before they seek help because of shame and worry about what others might think of them.
