Personal Reflection Questions For Recovering Addicts To Get Ready For The New Year
In our past two posts on this topic, we've been mostly focusing on reflecting on the previous year. Today we're going to focus on the year ahead and the questions you need to ask yourself to ensure that you and your sobriety are ready for a new challenge.
What do you want to accomplish in 2017?
Now is the time to figure out what you want to accomplish next year. Make a list of all of your goals. Be sure to start out small with obtainable goals first. These smaller and obtainable goals will help to keep you motivated all year long. Small and obtainable goals are also great for recovering addicts. This is because it will allow you to celebrate smaller goals which will feel like you are constantly moving forward with your sobriety.
After you have settled in on your smaller goals, next write down some bigger goals. Look at the big picture of what's to come in 2017. Think about a few major positive life changes that will benefit your life or others around you.
Now, we should state that all of your goals do not have to be sobriety based. However, all of your goals should keep your sobriety in check. Here's a great example of what we're talking about. Say getting a job in 2017 is one of your biggest goals as a recovering addict. It's a great goal to have. However, make sure the job you are applying for is not going to put you in danger of relapsing. For instance, getting a job checking identification at the local bar is not the best option for you. You might want to be social and meet people but working at bar just isn't going to work for someone fresh out of rehab. Maybe think about getting a job at a coffee shop instead. This will make for a good alternative. You'll still be able to meet people and there will not be any alcohol around to trigger a relapse.
How are you going to accomplish your goals for 2017?
So, you've got your goals all planned out. Now, what are you going to do to make these goals and dreams become reality?
Do you have an action plan figured out? Do you know all the steps that will be required to reach your goals? How much time will it take to reach them all? Will these goals take days, weeks, or months to reach? Will hitting your goals require a great amount of money, tools, or other things that will need to be acquired? All of these are great questions to ask yourself, plus there's many more that you can probably think of on your own.
You will never reach your goals without an action plan. It's crucial to your success, regardless of your sobriety issues. Putting a plan in place and committing to the plan should keep you on the right track throughout all of 2017.
We hope this series will help you prep and get ready for the New Year. Remember that spending a few moments reflecting on the past can help you move forward and transition into the new year. Be sure to not miss the other blogs in this series as well. They contain very valuable information and tips for recovering addicts. You can find links to part one and part two below.
