Set Limits: Know what you have to do and what you usually obligate yourself to do. You don't have make 300 cookies, but you do have to take time out of your schedule to go to your therapy appointments. Fewer decorations and gifts won't change the fact that the holidays will come, but the less is more approach may help you enjoy the festivities a little more.

Know When to Say No: If you have moved past the majority of your PPD issues, be aware that the holidays can trigger old behaviors for some. Have a plan in place for what to do when you feel yourself start to slide back into unhealthy patterns. Be sure to have the numbers of some supportive friends or your therapist with you at all times. Sometimes a conversation with a trusted ally can help you put things into perspective and refocus your energy.

Schedule Yourself Some Downtime: Taking time to unplug and get away from the rush of the season is essential. Go to the movies alone, get a massage, or take an afternoon to get your nails done. Whatever makes the time feel special and wondrous for you is essential.

Ask for What You Need, Don't Assume They Know: Be vocal about your needs during the season. If you need a break, ask for it. If you're feeling overwhelmed, talk the feeling through with someone. Don't assume that your friends, family, or partner know exactly what you need. Tell them and ask them to help you find a solution to the problem with you.
