One Drink Is Too Much for Older Drivers to Handle, Study Shows

Greensboro NC Alcohol Rehab CenterMany times, people head out to dinner with friends, have a glass of wine or a beer and then drive home without thinking that they are risking anyone’s safety. Even more frequently, people tend to have two or three servings of alcohol and then drive without giving it a second thought. Depending on blood alcohol levels and a person’s weight and height, having a glass or two of wine might not have the same effect as three or four when it comes to impairing driving abilities. However, it’s recommended that you don’t drink and drive at all. If you need help with alcohol addiction, call our Greensboro NC alcohol rehab center for help.

A new study puts this into perspective much more so than law enforcement stating that drinking and then driving is dangerous.

The University of Florida has released a new study that shows their research findings regarding how one drink affects individuals 55 years of age and older.

Most often, studies are done on young drivers. Researchers take a close look at how alcohol affects those that are on the younger end of the age spectrum. Now, however, this new study dives into how it can affect seniors and how they drive. The study was a part of research that was published in the Psychopharmacology journal.

Currently, it is legal to drive with a blood alcohol content, or BAC, of below 0.08.

Sara Jo Nixon, Ph.D., a professor of psychiatry at UF states that “Aging has changed in recent decades.” Older individuals are remaining active in both social and professional domains for longer periods of time. These environments often involve the opportunity for alcohol consumption. Yet, relatively little work has been directed to the study of the effects of alcohol among older, moderate drinkers.”

As you can see, this study brings to light the idea that not everyone is safe having a drink and then driving. Even more, this study could have an effect on legal driving limits in the future. Right now, individuals can consume alcohol and drive as long as their blog alcohol content is below 0.08. If their BAC is higher, they're not only driving under the influence, they're also putting themselves and others at risk.

Nixon also stated that “In general, older adults performed more poorly on measures of driving precision and drove more slowly than younger adults prior to the consumption of alcohol. Older adults also exhibited greater impairment as a result of alcohol consumption on two precision driving measures. Namely, steering rate and the ability to maintain a constant speed. Key skills essential to effective driving were compromised in the older group of drivers."

If you're considering drinking and driving this information should be helpful. It gives a different perspective to those who think having one drink won't affect their ability to drive properly.
