Are There Any Current Medications That Contain Cannabinoids?
Yes, there are several and a few of them have been FDA approved. One of the drugs that has been approved by the FDA is called Dronabinol . It actually contains THC. This drug is used to treat the nausea typically associated with chemotherapy or diseases such as AIDS. Nabilone is also an FDA approved drug. This one contains a synthetic cannabinoid that is similar to the chemical makeup of THC. It, too, is used to treat nausea for the same situations.
There are a few drugs that are not approved by the FDA but that are being used in several European countries as well as the UK. One of these drugs is called Sativex®. It contains equal parts THC and CBD. It is being used to treat spasticity caused by multiple sclerosis. This drug is currently in Phase III clinical trials in the U.S. These trials are trying to establish the drug as an effective treatment for cancer pain.
One of the newer drugs not on the market yet is called Epidiolex™. It has yet to complete the necessary clinical trials to obtain FDA approval. It is a CBD based drug. It was created to treat certain forms of childhood epilepsy. This drug has shown some successes with children with Dravet Syndrome. Dravet Syndome is a severe form of epilepsy.
Are Sick People More Vulnerable to Marijuana’s Health Risks?
The short answer is that medical professionals are not really sure yet. The experts at our drug and alcohol treatment center in Raleigh NC advise against it. Using this drug for medicinal purposes is still really new. There is not enough research yet to see if sick people, who already have a weakened immune system, will be more vulnerable to marijuana's various adverse effects. There is supporting evidence that shows that consistent marijuana use in young people can be harmful for their brain development. Heavy use during the adolescent years can cause permanent brain impairment in forming intelligence. Also, pregnant women that smoke marijuana run the risk of giving their babies neurological problems resulting in impaired school performance later on in their childhood.
