Welcome back. We are here to talk more about narcissistic personality disorder, often referred to as NPD. In our previous blog, we talked in short about a few most common symptoms and traits that occur in sufferers. Today we will take a look at this in more detail. If you're searching for therapists in Asheville, NC, call Legacy Freedom. We can help.
Grandiosity is a major symptom of this disorder. Those suffering will exaggerate talents and achievements and expect everyone around them to recognize their superiority. Their sense of self importance is large. They'll also have a sense of entitlement that offers unreasonable expectations and treatment. Unfortunately, this leads them to take advantage of others. They will do whatever it takes to achieve a means to their end.
NPD also leaves suffers with low self-esteem. This is often a direct cause of grandiosity or self importance. They require excessive admiration, are arrogant and show hostile behaviors and mood swings. They often have a chip on their shoulder with an attitude that shows they are unique and of high status. Sometimes, narcissistic people can be envious of others. However, they may turn that around and say that others are envious of them.
NPD symptoms also include jealousy. Those suffering might be jealous of family memebers, friends or strangers. This can cause a need to manipulate or belittle.
Dissociation from reality can happen in some cases. This is a mental departure from the real world and their surroundings.
This disorder may cause the need to bait victims into a situation or emotion so that the narcissist can feel superior. This is also done in order to get their way.
Narcissists have symptoms that cause them to have fantasies of beauty, brilliance, success, power and the perfect love story. However, they are unwilling to consider the feelings and needs of others. This leaves them with a constant need to manipulate others so that they don't see the "real side" of the narcissist.
NPD can cause an individual to become unfaithful to a significant other. This might happen no matter how committed they are. Marriage is no reason for them to stay faithful.
