In a recent study published by Lancet Psychiatry, 8,200 pregnant women were surveyed for postpartum depression (PPD). The study found that two-thirds of the mothers-to-be with severe depression had PPD symptoms before they gave birth. Previously scientists linked PPD with the rapid decrease of hormones after the delivery of the baby. The new information discovered during this study suggests that there may be other biological triggers that increase symptoms of severe depression and PPD in some women before their baby is born.
