In light of recent laws passed in 28 states of the U.S. and Washington D.C. legalizing marijuana for medical use, a new study shows that marijuana use has increased in adults over the age of 26. Fortunately, marijuana use in adolescents and young adults under the age of 26 has not increased. This study focuses on marijuana use in states that have loosely regulated laws for medicinal marijuana. If you need drug rehabilitation in Greensboro NC because of marijuana, call Legacy Freedom.
The study was done by Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health and Columbia University Medical Center. It found that there was an increase in the heavy use of marijuana in states where it's now legal for one reason or another. Whether it's for medicinal use only or for recreational use, it has increased significantly.
According to Silvia Martins, MD, PhD, professor of Epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health, and senior author, "In addition to the increase in rates of marijuana use among this age group, we found that the magnitude of impact on rates of marijuana use was greatest among heavy users."
The first author of the study, Arthur Robin Williams, MD, fellow, Department of Psychiatry at Columbia, reported that "If this is the case, states with non-medical or lax programs may bear the brunt of this increase, especially among adults over age 25."
Dr. Martins also states that "We believe our current, largely negative findings, however, cannot definitely rule out impending increases in cannabis use disorder without further study. The effects of changes in marijuana use prevalence might only be reflected with analyses conducted in future years with more data points. While the United States has entered a new era of marijuana control policy over the past two decades, our findings strongly suggest researchers should not treat all states with medical marijuana laws uniformly."
As you can see from this new study, the legalization of marijuana for any reason, recreational or medicinal use, might not be the best option for the United States. It's something that is a constant controversial subject, but smoking pot is risky and can promote poor health for those who use it regularly.
Do you smoke or use marijuana regularly? Do you know someone who does? Do you tend to use this drug daily? Is it a substance you consider to be "safe"? There seems to be quite a bit of controversy over whether or not it actually is safe or OK to use. There are many new studies that suggest pot isn't as safe and harmless as we sometimes assume.
