Legalization of Marijuana – The Cons

Asheville drug rehabThe controversy of legalizing marijuana is becoming a serious movement in our nation. For some areas, legalization is becoming a reality. There are several supporters who offer notable benefits for permitting the drug, but the cons seem to always outweigh any benefit. Below, you'll find several negative impacts legal marijuana can have.

Gateway Drug

A recent Yale University School of Medicine study revealed that teenage boys who abused alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana were 2 to 3 times more likely to abuse prescription drugs during young adulthood. Marijuana use alone was associated with increased prescription abuse in the teenage girls examined through the study. We hear about the dangers of gateway drugs but rarely put pot in this category. Many drug treatment researchers strongly support the idea that teens or young adults that abuse pot end up with an addiction to harder drugs like heroin and cocaine, later in life.

Health Issues

There have been funny jokes going around for decades about how pot affects our brain and memory. While many consider it an urban legend, scientific studies suggest that our brains are heavily affected by the drug. Blood vessels in the brain have restricted blood flow when smoking marijuana. Even those that haven't smoked in more than a month continue to have the same restricted blood flow until the inflammation goes down. Smoking more will cause them to restrict even longer.

Unfortunately, our brains aren't the only health issue we should worry about with pot. It's been estimated that pot smoke has carcinogens 50-70% higher than tobacco smoke. In addition, smokers tend to inhale marijuana more deeply than cigarettes. This increases the amount of time lungs are exposed to the carcinogens.

Marijuana use can also cause the following issues with our hearts:

  • Raised heart rate of 100% for up to three hours after it's been smoked
  • Heart Palpitations
  • Arrhythmia
  • Heart Attack

Mental Health

While it isn't clear what is triggering the conditions, researchers have found a link between pot use and mental illness like schizophrenia and depression.

No matter what the benefits or negative impacts are for legalized pot, one aspect will stay the same. Law enforcement, judicial systems and substance abuse treatment centers will continue to work together and fight to help communities become free from addiction - as well as, the devastating financial, emotional and physical effects it causes.
