Recently, lasers have been used for all kinds of medical assistance. Whether it's cataract surgery, hair removal, a cosmetic procedure or medical surgery, technology has advanced in this area quite quickly.
At the National Institute of Health, Research Center at UC San Francisco and the Ernest Gallo Clinic they're looking into whether or not laser therapy could help cocaine addicts recover from their dependency. Could lasers be the future of drug rehab?
Lasers and Addiction Recovery
Addiction treatment comes in all forms. Inpatient rehab requires patients to stay for 30, 60 or 90 days to detox, withdraw and recover from a dependency. Facilities like Legacy Freedom offer outpatient, holistic drug rehab in Asheville NC and other locations. Each type offers those suffering from addiction a way to quit using drugs or alcohol completely, as long as they're ready and willing to do so.
In new reports, laser therapy seems to be the talk of addiction treatment's future.
According to medicalnewstoday.com, "Researchers at UC San Francisco have managed to use laser lights as a means of eradicating addictive behaviors in rats. They targeted light in the prelimbic region of the brain in rats who were addicted to cocaine. They found that after exposure to the laser lights the rats demonstrated a significant reduction in addictive behavior."
Antonello Bonci, MD, scientific director of the intramural research program at the NIH's National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and lead author of this study stated that "When we turn on a laser light in the prelimbic region of the prefrontal cortex, the compulsive cocaine seeking is gone."
The theory behind this treatment coincides with acupuncture. There are acupuncture points within the body that can be stimulated. Typically, it is done by using small needles. The needles enter in the points and relieve the various pressures. The laser treatment will also target those same acupuncture points. But, this time the same nerve endings will be treated through laser instead of needle. The laser could also help with appetite suppression anxiety, relaxation and more.
Unfortunately lasers do have a lesser impact on the body the needles do. So, using lasers as an alternative to acupuncture might not work in situations where addiction is at an extreme level. All addicts are different, no two are alike. That is why customized treatment is key in recovery. For the best customized drug rehab in Asheville NC, be sure to start with Legacy Freedom.
Laser Treatment Used for Smokers
According to the Journal of Chinese medicine, a study was done where people were split into groups and then studied. Each group received different laser treatments. One group got fake laser treatment. At the end of the study 55% of those receiving laser treatments successfully quit smoking.
The group who got fake laser treatment had a 6% success rate. The group that got three treatments compared to four were 19% successful at quitting.
The results of this treatment sound promising but more research is needed. Also, the effectiveness of treating addicts who are dependent on harsher drugs like heroin or cocaine has yet to be studied in great detail. It is unclear whether or not the laser acupuncture will work for all types of addicts.
Helping Cocaine Addicts
Did you know that almost 500,000 people per year visit emergency rooms all over the US with cocaine related problems? More than 1 million Americans are addicted to cocaine. While this number might seem startling, it's a serious issue that many people deal with on a daily basis. Cocaine addiction is a bit different than other drugs because of one reason. When individuals start using this drug, they begin to do so compulsively. Eventually, they lose the ability to go about daily life without it. Their functioning skills are no longer working unless they have the drug in their system.
Another startling fact is that more than 70% of those who try to recover from cocaine addiction relapse within the first six months of treatment. This means that a new alternative to treatment for cocaine addiction would be very welcome. We hope that laser therapy will work and help those who struggle continually with this type of addiction.
