Time.com states that "Instagram is the worst social media network for mental health and wellbeing, according to a recent survey of almost 1,500 teens and young adults. While the photo-based platform got points for self-expression and self-identity, it was also associated with high levels of anxiety, depression, bullying and FOMO, or the fear of missing out. Out of five social networks included in the survey, YouTube received the highest marks for health and wellbeing and was the only site that received a net positive score by respondents. Twitter came in second, followed by Facebook and then Snapchat—with Instagram bringing up the rear."
As we mentioned in our previous blog post, making things look better than they actually are is very popular on Instagram. Many teens can Photoshop and filter selfies in a way that makes them look totally different than they do in real life. Often, people become envious of what they see in these photos, even if it's not reality. They begin to question why they don't look the same or better.
Filters are great for fun and unique photos. However, constantly using filters that take away blemishes, facial lines, and distort your features can give others the wrong idea of how they should actually look. Continually using filters to enhance your looks can leave you no longer happy with the way you really look. You may become unable to accept yourself as you are.
These are just a few ways that Instagram can damage self-esteem. What seems like a harmless social media network can be detrimental to one's outlook on themselves. It's important to understand that photos, filters, and enhancements on Instagram can make reality seem more exciting and gorgeous than it really is. There's nothing wrong with being yourself and accepting that Instagram is just a great way to have fun with enhancements. It should never take the place of what you truly see or believe.
