During the mental relapse stage, you start to think of when you used to use drugs or drink. You may think back fondly and reminiscence about the “good times” you had. You may be tempted to reach out to old friends. This is the start of the pull that could lead you to use drugs or drink again. It’s important to get a handle on your thoughts. When you start to think back, don’t look through rose-colored lenses. Remember what those “good times” led to – hangovers, fights with friends, lack of money, etc. Call your sponsor or loved one and tell them you’re still thinking about using. Ask them to remind you why you stopped and how much better your life is now that you’re in recovery.
If the first and second stages aren’t resolved, you enter the physical stage. In this final stage, you’ve avoided dealing with your feelings, you haven’t gotten a handle on your thoughts and now you’re seeking out drugs or alcohol. It’s hard to stop at this point, but it is possible. Make yourself wait half on hour. Call someone. Go to a movie. Think of all you have accomplished and how the high of a drug or the taste of alcohol is not going to be worth all of the work you’ve done. Even at this stage, it’s not too late to turn back. You can overcome the urge and stay on track.
