There is a famous quote that says, “The grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for.”
Hope is an optimistic outlook based on the idea that positive outcomes are ahead. You can have hope for small things, such as wanting a new recipe to turn out well, or you can have hope about larger things that relate to your career, family or finances. Having hope, or a sense of optimism, is what keeps us moving forward in life.
It’s also essential in dealing with life’s troubles. Being optimistic that things will turn around is what helps us manage the bad times. When we lose hope, the future can seem dark. Our problems can seem overwhelming and you may begin to believe that there is no reprieve.
If you’re a generally content and optimistic person, you may not know what it’s like to lose hope. But for some keeping the faith can be a struggle because of things life has thrown at them. People can lose hope for many reasons.
People who grew up in unhealthy homes may have never learned how to think positively and with hope. When children are neglected or abused, they probably see life as a struggle and think people are out to harm them because that’s all they know. Self-esteem and confidence is never developed, so they don’t understand the concept that they can make goals and work toward them, which is one way hope is built.
Adults who find themselves in unhealthy relationships where they are emotionally or physically abused can lose hope because they may not see a way out. If they are constantly belittled by their partner, they can lose self-esteem and begin to believe they are not a worthy person. They may even begin to believe they deserve this treatment, so they don’t bother getting out of the relationship.
Loss and grief can also make a person lose hope. Whether it is the death of a loved one, loss of a job, or going through a divorce, the sense of grief over these major changes can make one lose hope. Losing a loved one is a difficult situation that must be dealt with in order to cope with the grief in a healthy way. Getting a divorce, or breaking up with someone after a long-term relationship means you have to go back to living as a single person, which can be hard after many years of being a couple. Having to change careers can be a struggle either because of difficulty in finding a new job, or just the changes associated with working in a new environment.
Just plain old burnout can cause a person to lose hope. Sometimes a lack of change can make life seem boring and predictable. It can lead to becoming unmotivated to do anything that keeps us active and healthy. It’s easy to slip into a cycle of unhealthy behaviors, which will probably make us feel worse.
There are many reasons why people lose hope. But, it doesn’t have to mean it can’t be regained. Check back for the next part of this series to see how to get hope back after you’ve lost it.
