Hoarding and Trauma

Asheville, NC PTSD therapyAre you interested in learning more about hoarding? If so, we are here to continue talking about this disorder. It's something that can only be understood by those suffering. On the outside looking in, it's easy to wonder why anyone would want to collect clutter and junk. On the inside, all the clutter and junk is special. The items collected are unique and meaningful for those suffering from hoarding disorder.

Did you know that hoarding and trauma are directly linked at times? That's right. Many who suffer from hoarding have also been a victim of trauma at some point in their lives. Let's take a closer look. If you have a hoarding problem because of trauma, call Legacy. We offer holistic Asheville, NC PTSD therapy.

Unforutnately, hoarding can be dangerous and have side effects that aren't ideal for those directly or indirectly involved with hoarding. These conditions include:

  • Health hazards become an issue when the living space is full and cluttered with objects.
  • It's impossible to clean when a home is filled with items.
  • Bacteria and other germs can manifest and thrive in conditions that aren't sanitary.
  • Injury can occur if a hoarder falls over their belongings.

There are many reasons why people hoard. They find value in things that others do not. Hoarders also feel a sentimental attachment to things that they consider irreplaceable.

In our last blog post, we talked about how hoarding disorder can be a standalone problem or can co-occur with obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, attention deficit hyper activity disorder, or depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

This disorder can also stem from past trauma. Many times, childhood trauma plays a role in hoarding. This underlying root cause is something that can be a problem for an entire lifetime, or until it is properly addressed and treated. Oftentimes, once the trauma has been addressed and treated, the hoarding subsides, as well.

As we mentioned previously, once a hoarder becomes attached to items, they have severe anxiety and often panic when considering or talking about throwing items away. Even when they think that items will be donated to a good cause, they still have major anxiety and cannot part with them.

Because the act of hoarding can be caused by trauma, therapy might be the only option to fight this disorder. PTSD and other trauma related disorders can be treated with holistic therapy.
