Parties, spending time with family, cleaning house, preparing for meals and more consume your time during the holidays. While it’s usually fun for some, others tend to become extremely anxious thinking about and doing all the things that come with the holidays. The stress of it all can quickly get the best of us.
There are various reasons why we get so stressed during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Family turmoil, financial stress or having too much to do and not enough time to do it can really work on our mental state.
Even the calmest individuals tend to get a little stressed and anxious during the holidays. It’s hard not to. There’s just so much to do in a short amount of time. There are, however, a few ways to ensure you’re able to handle all the anxiety during the holidays.
If you can't get all your chores in order, complete the meal prep and get ready for the whole family to come over for holiday dinner, consider changing the traditions around. Have other family members bring the sides or have the meal at someone else's house this year. There's no need to be so stressed and anxious about planning and preparing that you can't even enjoy the dinner you're hosting. Let others help and change up those traditions! You might find that it's more fun for everyone when they all pitch in!
Take Time for Yourself
If you can't delegate chores and prep to others, at least take some time for yourself. Get a massage, take a bath or go for a long walk each day. Just an hour of "me time" can really change the pace of your emotions. You won't feel as burdened, stressed or anxious.
If you need a break from family and friends during the holidays, take time outside to get a breath of fresh air and relax. No one will blame you for taking a second to calm yourself.
Keep Family in the Loop
If you're having a tough time overcoming your anxiety, let your family know. They might be able to help you by taking your mind off things for a while. Go see a movie, play a board game or take a bike ride around the neighborhood. Sometimes, all you need is a little support from loved ones. Even when you think there is too much to do, you always have an hour to spend de-stressing. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones!
