Poplar Grove Plantation
The historic plantation site turns into a festive holiday experience in December. Each weekend they light up the grounds and invite families to bring blankets and chairs to spend the evening under the stars. They have a bonfire for roasting marshmallows and keeping things toasty. Plus, there's a Santa’s workshop in case someone wants to write a note to the big man. They also offer guided tours of the house, where each room is decorated in a theme. Holiday Train Expo
Throughout December, the Cape Fear Model Railroad Society sets up a train exhibit in Independence Mall. You can see and learn more about all kinds of trains in model villages and parks. The conductor of the Polar Express is usually on hand for photo opportunities with the kids. You can also see models being built.
If you want to spend the first day of the new year doing something crazy for charity, consider the 2nd annual Wrightsville Plunge. Admission fees go towards the Communities in Schools program that supports at-risk students in Cape Fear. At noon, you and other participants will be able to run into the cold Atlantic Ocean to “plunge for a purpose." Afterwards, there will be music, refreshments and other competitions. Christmas Train & Light Spectacular
