One of the absolute best places to start the summer fun is to visit Downtown Columbus. The downtown area of Columbus is a great example of living, working, and playing all in one place. Everything you need for a great day is walking distance away. Located in the heart of downtown you will find urban alleyways complete with awesome markets like the Pearl Market. The Columbus Commons is a great place to relax during some really inspiring summer concerts. Throughout the year there are some live concerts you do not want to miss. If nature is more your thing then the Scioto Mile is the place for you. This is a great place to do some bird watching along the shoreline. You can also dine at one of the world-class restaurants located in our downtown area. Your children can also play in the fountains. Did you know that Columbus is home to the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Columbus Clippers? If you enjoy a great hockey or baseball game, then this is the place to be. There is always a game going on.
If you like food, crafts, or unique things then do not miss the North Market. This particular market has over a million visitors a year. This awesome farmer’s market is a special place for all foodies, entrepreneurs, artisans, and anyone else interested in handcrafted, unique items. The North Market offers up a chance for you to buy something special that you won’t see in other places. Whether you are looking for handmade jewelry, homemade preserves, or other beautifully made things this is the place to be. In operation since 1876, the North Market will have live music, entertainment, festivals, open houses, and activities like cooking classes and demonstrations for visitors to partake in. Address: 59 Spruce Street, Columbus, OH 43215, 614-463-9664.
If outdoor fun and activities is more your game, then take a visit to Schiller Park. This park was originally known as Stewart’s Grove. Created in 1867, the 23 acre park was later renamed Schiller Park to honor the German poet Friedrick von Schiller. Although the name of the park and the street names inside the park were changed during World War II they were reinstated after the war. This unique park is reminiscent of what a German village might have been like. It hosts a recreation center, picnic areas, a fishing pond, and a stage. The Actor’s Summer Theatre uses the stage for its productions. There are softball diamonds available for the public to use. The park is also host to floral displays, a gazebo, a playground, and a basketball court. Address: 1069 Jaeger St, Columbus, OH 43206, 614-443-3699.
One of the best attractions today is the Ohio Theater. Built in 1928, this theater was once a movie house. Today, the theater hosts over a hundred performances annually including CAPA, Broadway Across America and the Ballet Met. The Columbus Symphony Orchestra and other national and international touring artists also perform here. This Spanish-Baroque theater is truly a work of art. It has a lush interior with a 21 foot high chandelier. Original furnishings that were brought in from all over the world are also on display. Rumor has it the furnishings cost more than the actual construction of the building so they are well worth the look. Address: 55 East State Street, Columbus, OH 43215-4264, 614-469-1045.
If you are looking for a place that fills all your varied needs, then look no further than the Short North Arts District. Here visitors will get a look at Ohio’s most vibrant neighborhood. This marvelous place is filled with amazing art, fashion, unique gifts, home décor, dining, and nightlife. It is known as the “Art and Soul of Columbus.” This district is home to over 300 businesses. Most are locally owned or headquartered here. The Short North Arts District has been a pioneer in the urban revitalization of Central Ohio. Once a deserted area that was filled with mostly derelict buildings and boarded up windows, in 1984 the area underwent a revitalization beginning with monthly gallery exhibits referred to as the Gallery Hop. Visitors will enjoy the many unique galleries, shops, and restaurants that can now be found in this award-winning neighborhood. A visit to Short North also allows visitors to experience the 17 lighted steel arches, an identifying feature of the district. Address: 21 E. 5th Avenue, Suite 103, Columbus, OH 43201, 614-299-8050.
