Alcohol and drug addiction sucks the happiness out of life. It makes you anxious because you’re always thinking about the next time you’re going to have a drink or get high. You get depressed when you come down or when you wake up the next day with a hangover. You feel hopeless because it seems like a cycle that will never end. However, if you are able to break free of addiction by getting help, it can feel like a whole new world opened up in front of you. Making the decision to get sober gives you a chance at a happy life.
You may not remember what life was like before you were dependent on drugs or alcohol to make yourself feel good. It may seem impossible to enjoy yourself or have a good time without being high or drunk. A sober life probably sounds like a boring life, but it doesn’t have to be. It just takes time to find different sources of happiness as a newly sober person. It won’t come easily. Being sober doesn’t automatically mean you will be happy, but it does give you a chance at happiness that you didn’t have when you were in the throes of addiction.
Here are some things to keep in mind:
Don’t expect to find happiness overnight. It takes time to reestablish what will bring you satisfaction. You may find enjoyment in different things than you did before. Keep an open mind and be willing to try new things. New experiences will broaden your perspective. A person dealing with drug and alcohol addiction often becomes so wrapped up in their own little world that they forget about everything else. Recovery is a time to reintroduce yourself to the real world.
Being happy doesn’t mean that you’ll always feel great or walk around with a smile on your face. It just means that you have a feeling of contentment. You’ll have bad days and you’ll go through periods of being unhappy, but if you have a sense of being okay with where you are in life, you’ll be able to get through the bad days without turning to drugs or alcohol.
In order to find happiness, you will also need to experience emotional sobriety, which is the ability to feel your feelings. Most addicts turned to drugs and alcohol in order to numb feelings. As a newly sober person, you may experience emotional roller coasters. Your mood may go from one extreme to another. You will need to learn to deal with those emotions without the crutch of drugs or alcohol.
You can’t be happy if you are still clinging to negative thoughts. It’s easy to continue to beat yourself up over past mistakes, but you need to forgive yourself so you can move forward. Try to recognize negative thinking patterns and dismiss them.
One of the first steps to achieve the happiness you want is to feel that you deserve it. It will take commitment and hard work in order to find it again, but it can be done.
