Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy pioneered by Francine Shapiro. EMDR focuses on disturbing memories which cause psychopathology conditions and, in some cases, addictive behaviors. This form of rehabilitative therapy alleviates symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other traumatic experiences. EMDR is used for people that have experienced severe trauma which remains unresolved.
Traumatic experiences overwhelm normal cognitive and neurological coping mechanisms. Our memory and associated stimuli are insufficiently processed, and stored in isolated memory networks. EMDR therapy helps to process distressing memories that result from trauma. This form of therapy helps to reduce the lingering effects of unresolved trauma. Relief occurs by allowing you to develop adaptive coping mechanisms. We use an eight-step protocol that recalls distressing moments while you receive one of a number of bilateral sensory inputs. The use of EMDR was originally developed to treat adults suffering from PTSD; however, it's also proven to treat other conditions such as addiction and substance abuse.
