Exercise Prevents Marijuana Relapse

drug treatment in Raleigh NCAddiction to marijuana is growing in the United States. With more and more states legalizing the drug and making it readily accessible to those over the age of 18, the number of people who report being addicted to pot has steadily increased over the last few years. Researchers estimate that 30 percent of all cannabis users will develop an addiction. Even more alarming, many regard marijuana as a mostly harmless substance. This addiction, like other substance addictions, should be taken seriously. At Legacy Freedom, the number one center for drug treatment in Raleigh NC, we do!

During marijuana use, a 'high' or euphoria is experienced. When used regularly, the drug can have long-term effects on the way the user's brain reacts to the drug. Much like many other drugs, cannabis affects the brain's pleasure center. With frequent or heavy use, the chemicals in this part of the brain can be altered. These changes in the makeup of the brain chemicals are what paves the way for marijuana addiction to take hold.

As with other drugs, the process of detoxing your body from the chemicals, like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and other cannabinoids can be very physically taxing. While this drug is viewed by many to be relatively harmless, the number of admissions to drug treatment programs for dependence on marijuana has steadily increased in recent years. There is no medicinal way to treat an addiction to marijuana. However, a recent study by Vanderbilt University found that there was an important link between exercise and the reduction in the cravings for cannabis experienced by people in the study group.

Drug Treatment in Raleigh NCIn the Vanderbilt study, eight women and four men were asked to exercise once a day for 30 minutes. The study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, revealed that after just a few sessions participants reported a reduced craving for marijuana. Researchers already know that exercise has many benefits for the brain, including the ability to boost mood and create natural sensations of euphoria. After ten sessions on the treadmills, study participants reported that their cravings for cannabis were reduced by more than half. Vanderbilt Addiction Center director Peter Martin said that these findings are significant due to "the magnitude of the cannabis problem in the United States." According to the study's co-author and director of Vanderbilt's Energy Balance Laboratory, Mac Buchowski, "It opens up exercise as a modality in prevention and treatment for, at least, marijuana abuse."

Peter Martin sees the results of this study as essential to the understanding of how the brain works with exercise and addiction. Martin also cites recent studies which prove that the once accepted belief that marijuana was not unhealthy has been replaced by new data that shows that smoking marijuana may be a factor for developing psychosis. He also noted that among young people, smoking marijuana can lead to panic attacks which have the potential to become mood disorders or psychosis.

Aside from the mental health concerns about marijuana use, there are significant health findings that show the drug is not as harmless as previously thought. According to the Mayo Clinic, marijuana smoke contains 50 to 70 percent more carcinogenic hydrocarbons than tobacco smoke. Exposure to carcinogens is also increased because marijuana smoke is typically inhaled more deeply and held longer than tobacco smoke.

The withdrawals from marijuana have been reported to be similar to those from tobacco or other drugs. The symptoms of withdrawals range from increased cravings, anxiety and sleeplessness to loss of appetite and grouchiness. Using exercise while detoxing from marijuana helps to counter these symptoms by stimulating the brain to release endorphins that combat anxiety and improve mood. Exercise also stimulates appetite and helps combat insomnia. By replacing an unhealthy addiction to marijuana with exercise, you are improving your overall health both physically and mentally.
