You don’t have to be unemployed to drink more during a slow economy, according to a new study. Researchers found that those who have jobs drink more during a recession, which differs from findings in a study done several years prior.

Drinking More in a Down Economy
Researchers at the University of Buffalo Research Institute on Addictions found that it wasn’t just the unemployed who begin drinking more. They analyzed data gathered from studies that surveyed employed people during the 2007-2009 recession. The polls asked about drinking habits over two different periods of time. Authors of the study took phone surveys of 2,501 employed people in 2002 and then in 2003, before the recession. The second phone survey was conducted between 2008 and 2011 on 2,581 employed people. They found that excessive drinking after work increased during the recession.
Michael Frone, one of the senior researchers who worked on the study, explained, “Even among the employed, economic downturns can create sources of work-related and financial stress that may lead to lower levels of alcohol use during the workday, but higher levels of excessive and ill-timed alcohol use away from work.”
Among those surveyed who drank, it was middle-aged people who had the largest increase. There was no change for younger people in the workforce. Frone cited that younger people may have fewer financial responsibilities than someone who is older and who may be supporting a family or have concerns about retirement. The increased demands could lead to more drinking, especially if there is a fear of being laid off.
In an interesting comment by Frone, he explains that the rate of drinking during the workday decreased during the recession.
“Despite the increased stress at work that came with the recession,” he said. “Employees decreased their alcohol use during the workday to avoid putting their employment in jeopardy.”
He goes on to say that excessive drinking after work is likely a way to reduce stress and blow off steam after a stressful workday.
Even though drinking at work did not increase, employers could face the consequences of their employees drinking excessively on weeknights.
“Excessive drinking can lead to absenteeism or coming to work hung over, which can affect productivity,” said Frone. “Also, increased drinking after work may lead to family problems, which can affect performance at work.”
