Easy Resolutions for Recovering Addicts
Spend Time Outdoors - Especially in winter, we forget to take time to step outside and breathe a breath of fresh air. Make a point to spend at least 10 minutes outdoors once a day. You’ll be surprised by how easy it is to do this and how much better you’ll feel after!
Put Electronics Away - While we don’t expect you to put them away indefinitely, it is important to think about leaving them in your pocket or bag during time spent with family and friends. Give yourself this mental break. Even when you don’t realize it, constantly checking email or social media is tiring. Make your resolution by setting goals. Don’t use your tablet or phone during TV time. Put your phone away when meeting friends or family for dinner. Start small and then continue moving forward until you reach the point that you’re able to leave your phone or tablet alone for an hour at a time.
Read Inspirational Books - Did you know that inspirational books can not only help us reach our goals, brighten days and change our negative attitudes, they can also inspire us to be creative and take action? That’s right. Make one of your New Year’s resolutions for 2016 to read inspirational stories from books that motivate us. Encouragement is key in recovery and this is a great way to give yourself a positive boost, no matter where you are. At home, in the coffee shop, at the doctor’s office, and more!
Don’t be afraid to choose several books to read and leave them in the car, by your bed and in your briefcase or purse. No one says you have to read one book at a time, from cover to cover, and then move on to the next. Just pick these books up when you need a minute to refresh. Open it randomly and read. You’ll be surprised by how inspired you’ll be after reading for just ten minutes!
The best way to find inspirational books is by asking friends and family. You can go from there in your search to find the best. Below, you’ll find a few to help you get started:
- The Art of Possibility by Rosamund and Benjamin Zander
- Steve Jobs: The Man Who Thought Different by Karen Blumenthal
- Love Does by Bob Goff
- Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell
- Life Itself by Roger Ebert
We hope these resolutions help you not only continue your recovery throughout 2016, but also help you grow and learn more. If you'd like to take a look at a few more easy resolutions to consider, visit back with our next blog post, soon.
