Tips for Talking Hobbies, School, and Work

Hobbies

Everyone has a hobby of some sort. This is what they do when not working. It's usually a fun topic that everyone loves to talk about. Here are a few pointers on how to ask questions about a person's hobby.

What do you enjoying doing in your free time?

Based on their answer, ask an appropriate follow up question about their hobby.

If the person claims that they have no real hobbies, then ask them general interest questions. Use these as a guide.

      Do you collect things?

      Ever do any gardening?

      Are you into photography?

Do you like to go dancing?

Do you draw, paint, or sculpt?

Do you play an instrument? Or - Are you in a band?

School

The simplest and easiest way to start a conversation about school is by asking the other person a few very simple questions. Here are a few examples.

What school do you go to?

      What are you studying?

      What is your favorite subject?

      What's your least favorite subject?

What do you want to do after you graduate?

Have you ever studied abroad, or participated in a student exchange program?

Work

It's never really rude to ask someone what they do for work. It's a common topic of conversation that almost everyone uses when getting to know someone new. If you want to be direct, just ask them what they do for a living. Depending on the answer, you can follow up with question about the industry, the city or town where their job is located, the commute to and from their job, and so much more.

On a final note, try to include as many open ended questions as possible. This will help you keep the conversation moving.
