Welcome back to part two in our mini series on e-cigarettes, your child, and what parents should know to keep their kids safe from nicotine. If you are new to this series, you can read part one here. For a quick review, part one discussed what an e-cigarette actually is, the parts that make them up, and how they differ from traditional tobacco cigarettes. We also talked about how vaping, or smoking an e-cig, can also be harmful to a person's health and wellbeing. Today, we're going to talk about some stats on teen use of e-cigs, as well as a few things that you can do as a parent to help keep your child from vaping. If your son or daughter needs alcohol and drug rehab in Raleigh NC, please call Legacy Freedom today. Our holistic, outpatient programs are perfect for teens.
How Many Teens Are Using E-Cigs? Since this device has been marketed as a tool to help traditional smokers quit, one would think that teens really wouldn't have much of an interest. However, this is not true and there are several reports that say otherwise. Data from the CDC, or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, report that more than 250,000 young people used e-cigarettes in 2013. The alarming fact here is that these numbers represent only the teens who had never smoked traditional cigarettes before. Extrapolating this data proves that vaping is responsible for a huge part of the younger population being introduced, and possibly addicted, to nicotine, whereas they might have never tried smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes.
Can I Protect My Teen From E- Cigarettes? Yes, you can. The best way to protect your kid from nicotine is to talk with them about it. Open up the lines of communication with your child, but do so in a non-threatening, non-judgemental way. You have to let your child know that you trust their judgement, and know that they will do the right things when you are not there to watch over them. Also be very clear that you do not want them using traditional tobacco cigarettes, nor do you want them vaping.
Explain to your child the health factors involved with smoking. Get on the internet and show them pictures of the various forms of cancer that have been associated with smoking. Show them the famous "dirty lungs" compared to the lungs of a nonsmoker picture. These are very powerful images that can really make a positive impact on your child's decision to avoid smoking.
Also let your child know that there is no such thing as a safe cigarette. Anything that has nicotine mixed in is never safe. Educating your teen will empower them to make the right decisions when the time comes for them to say no.
