Many people ring in the new year with several drinks, if not more than that. It's a so-called tradition year after year. However, what if we refrain from drinking alcohol on New Year's? Or, what if we choose to have a dry January? Of course, that means skipping all types of alcohol for 31 days, but – why not? Alcohol can cause all sorts of medical issues. We see it daily at our Greensboro NC alcohol rehab center. It causes our metabolism to slow, weight gain and moodiness. So, for those looking to make a fresh start during the new year, try the dry January challenge.
In Europe, abstaining from alcohol for the entire first month of the year is gaining popularity. It's also becoming popular here in the US. The campaign, Dry January is an effort to bring awareness to those who are trying to cut down on alcohol consumption.
According to huffingtonpost.com, "A new study published last month in the journal Health Psychology found that those who merely attempted to stop drinking for a month reported a decrease in alcohol consumption over the following six months. Sixty-four percent of the 857 study participants successfully upheld their commitment to a booze-free January and were consuming less alcohol and getting drunk less often six months later. There’s one caveat to the study: Participants had to volunteer to go without alcohol, so they may not represent the average person."
This is great news for those that are interested in quitting drinking but can't quite get their heads wrapped around how to do so. Abstaining for one month seems fairly easy in the grand scheme of quitting, overall.
Many doctors agree that choosing to give alcohol up for one whole month is the best way to start on the journey of recovery. For those hoping to do so this year, you might not be ready to start in January. That's OK. Consider starting February 1st or March 1st. Do what works for you. However, keep in mind that the sooner you start your month long refrain from alcohol, the quicker you will be able to quit, altogether. Then, you'll be well on your way to recovery and a healthy lifestyle that doesn't depend on a substance.
Why not give this opportunity a chance? You can ask a friend to do this challenge with you, or you can hold yourself accountable by telling family members about your goal. When you think about it, a month is nothing compared to the lifetime you'll gain once you beat your addiction and recover from it. Consider this challenge in 2017, whether you start now, tomorrow or next month. We hope you are able to complete it. If you need help, reach out to Legacy Freedom. We are here to help.
