Drug Use and No Morals

As we well know, drug users have trouble doing what is right, which is ultimately stop using the drugs. While there are several reasons why, the main issue is that our body becomes dependent on drugs because the chemicals in our brains become altered while using. That means our brains are telling our bodies that we need the substance to continue living.

Even more, the new study shows that actually reduces our morals. Believe it or not, those that use meth or cocaine have a hard time understanding what's right and wrong. Even more, they're unable to detect others's emotions and feelings. In particular, those addicted to and using cocaine and/or meth have trouble understanding when someone is afraid. They also lose their ability to have empathy for someone else.

Furthermore, more than 70 percent of inmates that are in U.S. prisons today have or had a problem with substance abuse at the time of their crime. This shows that their brains were altered and not functioning properly due to drug use.

In fact, those that were using meth and cocaine regularly during the time that they committed a crime were showing one or more of the following behaviors:

  • Poor judgement in moral situations
  • Poor decision making
  • Antisocial behavior

It's important to understand how drugs can affect you when they're used regularly. There are more risks than just forming an addiction. As you can see, it can alter your morals and way of thinking when it comes to making good decisions. It can also cause individuals to commit crimes without even realizing what they're doing at the time.

According to the lead author of this study, Samantha Fede, "This is the first study to suggest impairments in the neural systems of moral processing in both cocaine and methamphetamine users. Although further research into the connectivity of systems in stimulant use is needed, this provides promising initial understanding of fronto-limbic deficits in stimulant users."

The research was conducted on inmates and those that have used drugs long-term. They were studied separately and then the results of each were compared with non-drug users that were also studied.
