As we are learning in our current blog post series, there are four stages of relapse that can happen at any point during substance abuse recovery. Our drug treatment in Charlotte NC mentioned last post, that the  second stage of relapse is mental relapse. Below, you will find a few ways that can help you deal with mental relapse, BEFORE you give in and move to stage three of relapse.

Tell someone that you're having urges to use. Call a friend, a support person, or someone in recovery. Share with them what you're going through. The magic of sharing is that the minute you start to talk about what you're thinking and feeling, your urges begin to lessen.

Distract yourself. When you think about using, do something to occupy yourself. Meet a friend for coffee. Go to a meeting or treatment program. Get up and go for a walk. If you sit around contemplating your urge, you're giving your mental relapse room to grow. Don't make that mistake. Find a good distraction that takes your mind off the urge.

Wait for 30 minutes. Most urges typically last for less than 15 to 30 minutes. When you feel the urge to use drugs or drink alcohol, it feels like an eternity. If  you can keep yourself busy and do the things you're supposed to do, it will quickly be gone.

Recover one day at a time. Don't think about the possibly of the future. Don't wonder how long you can keep your recovery going. Doing so is overwhelming and paralyzing. Even those that have been in recovery for a decade or more still have to take recovery a day at a time.

One day at a time, means you should match your goals to your emotional strength. When you feel strong and motivated to not use, tell yourself that you won't use for the next week or the next month. Set short term goals. But when you're struggling and having lots of urges, tell yourself that you won't use for today or for the next 30 minutes.

Make relaxation part of your recovery. Relaxation is an important part of relapse prevention because when you're tense you tend to do what’s familiar even if it's wrong, instead of what's new and right. When you're tense you tend to repeat the same mistakes you made before. When you're relaxed you are more open to change.

Realizing that there are stages to relapse during recovery is important. Dealing with each stage, fighting urges, and remembering your reasons for recovering are essential to stay on the right path to a healthy life.
