Should You Drug Test Your Teen?
Drug testing your child is a personal choice. It can be a powerful preventative measure if utilized properly within the boundaries and scope of actually being needed. What we mean is this, do not drug test your teen for little or no reason, or just to show authority and control. Even the AAP, or American Academy of Pediatrics, opposes this method of parenting. If you force your teen to take a drug test, be sure there is just cause, good reasoning, and that your son or daughter understands exactly why they are being subjected to drug screening. Randomly forcing your child to be tested without good reasons can really be detrimental to your relationship.
However, that being said, there are times when it is appropriate as a parent to randomly drug test your child. If your child is fresh out of a treatment program for addiction, then random testing as part of the recovery plan can be used to prevent an early relapse. If your child is serious about recovery then they should agree with no issues.
If you notice significant changes in your child's behavior, grades, moods and emotions ... do not immediately jump to the drug use conclusion; talk to them first. However, if you notice these things and catch your child with illicit paraphernalia, or find signs of drug use, then a random test could be a good solution.
We all know that drug use among teens is very scary. We believe that preventing drug use all begins at home, with good parenting and role modeling. Start talking to your kids about the dangers of drugs and alcohol at a young age. Talk to them about the harmful consequences of overdosing. Teach them how to say no to peer pressure and roleplay real life scenarios with them. Importantly, make it clear that drug use will not be tolerated and explain the consequences in great detail. Stand behind your values when they are tested and be firm in your beliefs. Do your best to always talk openly about the hard subjects and your child will be better off for it.
We hope these last two posts have helped answered some of the questions you might have had about drug testing your teenager. Just remember, you're not a police officer, but you're not their friend either. If you need more information about how to help your child with addiction problems, reach out to Legacy Freedom today.
