Drug Rehab in Raleigh News | Social Drinkers Blackout Part 2
In part one of this series we spoke about how social drinkers, especially females, can actually experience blackouts just like the heaviest of drinkers. We also wanted to ensure our readers that Legacy Freedom provides top notch alcohol and drug rehab in Raleigh NC. When someone experiences a blackout, they might participate in rowdy, emotionally charged events but will not remember it or any of the details.
Many of the students that participated in the study said that after their blackout, they later learned that they had engaged in a wide range of risky activities. These activities consisted of having unprotected sexual intercourse, vandalizing property, and driving while intoxicated. Driving while under the influence can lead to serious health, legal consequences, and even death to you or someone else.
Dr. Aaron White, Ph.D and assistant research professor of psychiatry at Duke and lead author of the study, stressed that because of the high level of intoxication needed to experience a blackout, other psychological processes may also become impaired. Decision-making, judgment, and impulse control could all become impaired and this could lead a person to make hazardous choices during these blackout episodes.
Students that experience frequent blackouts also seem to have lower grade point averages, and other signs of drinking problems, compared to their non-drinking counterparts. The researchers also found that female students drink less heavily compared to their male counterparts, but they were just as likely to experience blackouts. Because of this, females run a greater risk for a variety of hazardous consequences including rape and death.
In conclusion, the researchers believe that the more information that can be learned about how and why blackouts occur, we can better study the potential dangers associated with them. This will provide better alcohol-awareness training for students and young people. This type of awareness and training could be effective if made readily available as early as possible to students when they arrive on campus for the first time.
Dr. White says "We want to provide students with information that will help them make good, informed decisions regarding their use of alcohol." He noted "It is important for students to know what blackouts are and what factors seem to increase the risk of blackout occurrence so that they can be avoided."
