Drug Rehab Charlotte: Try to stay ahead of stress with these helpful tips!
Welcome back! In our last post, we began discussing the importance of taking care of yourself post addiction. Oftentimes the aftercare when coming from a center for drug rehab in Charlotte can be more challenging than being in drug rehab itself. There are always supportive peers that have been in your shoes in rehab to help you overcome your addiction. That’s not always the case, post rehab. Below, you’ll find a few more tips that will help you keep stress and relapse away during the holidays.
Light conversation is key. During the holidays, you’ll likely spend a great deal of time with your extended family and friends. Chances are, during that time, you’ll encounter an old friend or relative that wants to argue about topics that are controversial or close to your heart. Though it’s impossible to totally ignore this person, there are a few things you can do to help with the situation.
First: When spending time with this person, focus on staying calm. Focus on keeping peace within yourself. Doing anything that might make you feel “off” will enhance the issue, once it arises.
Second: Never sit alone with this person in a room. Always have someone there to buffer the situation. Also, try not to have a direct conversation with this person. A friendly “hello, how are you?” will suffice; especially if they’re a distant relative or friend.
Third: If you do find yourself in conversation with the person take a deep breath and refrain from commenting on the things that are said. Ignore hostile or derogatory remarks.
Fourth: Find something you like about the person. Make sure this trait is sincere and positive. Comment on their new haircut or shoes. Finding that one positive thing can really steer the conversation in the right direction from the beginning. You can then talk about things you agree on; movies, TV shows, or the weather.
Fifth: When the conversation seems to be coming to an end, excuse yourself. Don’t allow silence to open a new opportunity for a bad conversation.
Dealing with extended family and friends during the holidays can be stressful. You never know what to expect and that alone can cause a great deal of anxiety and stress.
